Las voces diversas de la diáspora is a quarterly publication that seeks to highlight and amplify the identity, culture, and contributions of Black/Afro-Latinx and Hispanic people of the Diaspora. We know that teachers want to incorporate more of this cultural content in their curriculum but may not know where they can access quality, relevant, comprehensible resources. We hope that we can help you with that journey!

What's included in this edition? There are 4 articles. Each article comes with activities!

1. The Underground Railroad to Mexico: Students will learn about the beginnings of how the underground railroad started in Mexico and its history pertaining to the growth of the Afro-Mexican community.

Cultural integration topics: racism, discrimination, history, human trafficking, triumph, indigenous community

Structures: Present and past tense

2. Dance of the devils: Students will learn about the history, dance, and ceremony that occurs at the same time as Día de muertos, in the Afro Mexican community.

3. Learn about Francia Márquez Mina, a relentless environmental activist who just made history as the first Afro-Colombian vice president. The informational text shares interesting details about her life and fights for environmental equality for both Afro-Colombian and Indigenous, and rural farmers. Her life and ascent to a powerful position are awe-inspiring. Your students should know about her! Students learn important vocabulary terms such as territorios ancestrales, minería, sostenible, medio ambiente, and ambientalista.

4. Christmas in February, really? Yes, this is the tradition of one Afro-Colombian town., and the factors that forged this tradition, are nonetheless intriguing! Students will learn about this winter tradition and the history that underpins it.
